Tillandsia 'Spanish Gold'

Derek Butcher Tillandsia 'Spanish Gold' "Some few years ago I got a few strands of Tillandsia usneoides from the Editor of Die Bromelie, Wolfgang Tittelbach, where he said the flowers were yellow! I had always read that the flowers for this species were green and this was my experience too. I was somewhat sceptical of my acquisition.

In December 1999 it flowered and , yes, the petals were yellow and larger than expected. A 'few' photographs were taken! Wow! What a discovery! I told Dr. Walter Till in Austria about my astonishing plant and he said it could be found in Northern Peru although the form that was in the collection of Wolfgang Tittelbach was from yet another source! I boasted again to Renate Ehlers in Germany only to be advised it is not uncommon!

By now I was somewhat deflated but I'll bet a lot of you have not seen a yellow flowered Tillandsia usneoides which I am calling 'Spanish Gold' for obvious reasons. I wonder why it has not been found in Florida if it is not uncommon. Perhaps it only occurs in South America. If anyone can add information on this yellow flowered enigma their input would be greatly appreciated.

My last question is why hasn't anyone written about it before?

See Book Review in J. Brom. Soc. 56(3): 137. 2006 which shows this plant is also found in Chile."
