The Gardens of Ed and Moyna Prince

Photos by Michael Andreas

On January 1, 2002, Ed and Moyna Prince, longtime members of the Bromeliad Society of South Florida, hosted an open house for society members. My wife Karen and I decided to drive down to Miami from Merritt Island thinking it would be a fun way to spend New Years day. I had just received a new digital camera, a Sony Mavica MVC-CD300, for Christmas and I was anxious to try it out. As you can see from the photos below I am very happy with the results.

Aside from the variety and quality of bromeliads in their collection, one of the unique elements of Ed and Moyna's landscape is that so much of it is in sun or very high light. Keep that in mind when viewing these pictures and notice how the bright light brings out the best colors in the bromeliads. You will also notice how groups of the same bromeliads are often planted together, a technique Moyna says she picked up from the late Wally Berg. It has a dramatic effect and also provides unity to the gardens.

Several months earlier Moyna sent me photos of bromeliads that she had taken over the years. These can be viewed from the menu on the left.
